Northern Trust Company
“Building a real learning organization means
not simply developing a series of programmatic responses, but
weaving the learning into the fabric of the organization.“
- Tim Moen, Executive Vice President, Human Resources
Northern Trust Company, a financial services company with 82
offices in 12 states and employing 6,000 people in the Chicago
area, is an awardee of WorkforceChicago2.0 due to its significant
investment in its employees and its strategies of leadership
development. The Northern Trust Company invests 66 percent of
its expenses to develop and manage its human capital resources.
Taking a strong focus on developing leaders from within the
company, and engaging its business units to ensure training
methods are appropriate for the workplace, Northern Trust leverages
technology to electronically deliver training through a learning
management system that incorporates Web-based learning, online
access to courses and materials, onsite workshops and trainings,
and career resources.
Other techniques that contribute to the success of Northern
Trust’s employee development efforts include integrated
on-the-job training programs and voluntary mentoring programs
that match motivated employees with experienced managers. Northern
Trust is committed to developing its employees; up to 25% of
managers’ annual incentive and merit pay is tied to their
success in developing and managing their staff. All of these
efforts have helped to establish The Northern Trust Company
as one of Fortune Magazine’s “100 Best Companies
to Work For.”
